Hi all,

First of all I am glad to have an Online Opportunity to render some heavy models.

It worked well for me with default materials and textures, But when i tried to use OSL Shaders [Open Shading Language] , It is not getting rendered it seems. I will Attach my rendered images. Please, take a look at it and Help me to find out the right way to solve the issue.

OSL - from what I know - is supported only for CPU ( wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manua...Cycles/GPU_Rendering )

Current version of RayPump service does not provide CPU jobs.

Hmm. This is frustrating, but understandable since cycles isn't supporting OSL and Subsurface Scattering on the GPU. I wonder if it would be hard to create a work around for this; both OSL and SS are very cool features. Obviously, at some point these features should be on the GPU, I would expect, the question is how soon? It does diminish the value of RayPump to not have support for these features.

I'm not much into details, but looks like supporting those on GPU is not top priority for Blender devs - don't know why, really. But those differences are here for long months and now, after one of the main Cycl
es developer has left the team - things are going to stand by, IMHO.

Perhaps the other option is more realistic - RayPump will support CPU jobs. But this is not such a great news - CPU vs GPU speed differences are huge, so CPU jobs will tend to be slow (read: expensive).

The optimal solution would be to write GPU support for "the features" myself - but I'm still too short for that :) - not exactly my cup of tea. :blink:

@melon I don't blame you. I'm not sure how this works...does Cycles divide up the tasks so that most things go to the GPU, but the OSL calculation would be handled on the CPU? Or, is it a case where if any shader in the scene is an OSL shader, then the whole scene is rendered on the CPU? I imagine adding GPU support isn't exactly a "cakewalk", otherwise they would have done it already.

@melon,
As you said, raypump will support CPU jobs, If it does, then how can we specify it to do that. Because by default it is considering our project to get rendered by GPU. Couldn't find any option to handle it via CPU.

Once it's ready, you won't have problems finding it :) There will be GPU/CPU switch right in RayPump's panel.

But don't expect this too soon. There's lot of CPU computing power needed to provide something worth giving to public and RayPump is still focused on GPU. It just seems to be "last hope feature", and as such needs more time to be ready.

Hi melon,

I tried your latest release pack on windows, to get osl shaders rendered, but all my trials went in vain.

1] I tried with Feature set-Experimental, Job type- free, Acceleration-CPU
Result --It got rendered, but, acceleration mode automatically changed to GPU and output was certainly same as before.

2] Feature set-Supported, Job type- static, Acceleration-CPU
Result-- PFA [Please Find the Attachment] Aborting in middle and no output.

And I am sure it is not my network problem.

1. Free jobs do not use CPU.

2. Static job on CPU failed - I should investigate further. Does this fail every time?
